Breaking down on a motorway is one of the most frightening things that can happen to a driver. The traffic flying past at 70mph, the uncertainty of what to do next — it can feel completely overwhelming in the moment. But if you stay calm and follow a clear sequence of steps, you’ll be safe and on your way much faster than you think.
Pull Over to the Hard Shoulder Immediately
The moment you notice something is wrong — an unusual noise, a warning light, the car losing power — don’t wait. Signal left and move to the hard shoulder as soon as it’s safe to do so. Try to stop near an emergency telephone post if you can see one. Once you’re stopped, keep your wheels turned towards the bank or barrier, not towards the carriageway.
If you can’t make it to the hard shoulder and break down in a live lane, stay in the car with your seatbelt on, switch on your hazard lights, and call 999 immediately. Do not try to exit the vehicle.
Turn Hazard Lights On — Even in Daylight
This sounds obvious, but in the panic of the moment, people sometimes forget. Your hazard lights are the first signal to other drivers that something is wrong. Turn them on the moment you’re pulling over, and leave them on until the recovery vehicle arrives.
In poor visibility or at night, you should also try to use a warning triangle if you have one — but only on a single carriageway, never on a motorway hard shoulder.
Get Yourself and Passengers Behind the Barrier
Exit the vehicle from the left-hand door — never the driver’s side — and get as far away from the carriageway as possible. The armco barrier or grass bank is your safest position. Take your phone, any medication you need, and your vehicle documents with you, but don’t waste time gathering bags or belongings.
Pets should be kept in the vehicle with the windows slightly open if it’s warm. Never let animals out on a motorway.
Call for Help
Once you’re safely behind the barrier, call your breakdown service immediately. If you don’t have cover, call Jam’s Breakdown Recovery on 07369 205 703 — we cover the M1 corridor and surrounding motorway network around Milton Keynes and respond quickly.
Give the operator your location as precisely as possible. Look for the orange marker posts on the hard shoulder — they show your exact position. You can also use the What3Words app to share your precise GPS location with us.
If you feel in immediate danger, call 999 first.
Stay Visible but Stay Safe
Don’t stand in front of the vehicle or between the vehicle and the carriageway. Don’t walk along the hard shoulder to reach the emergency phone — they’re spaced every mile and that’s too far to walk safely. Use your mobile phone instead.
If it’s dark, wear a hi-vis vest if you have one. Most cars don’t carry them, but it’s worth keeping one in the glovebox. A torch is also genuinely useful.
What Happens When Recovery Arrives
When the recovery truck arrives, the driver will assess your vehicle and advise whether it can be repaired at the roadside or needs to be transported. In most cases on a motorway, the vehicle is loaded onto the flatbed and taken to a garage or safe location of your choice.
At Jam’s Recovery, we carry the equipment to handle cars, vans, SUVs and motorcycles. We’ll get you off the motorway safely, and if you’re travelling alone, we’ll make sure you’re not left stranded.
Prevention Is Better Than Recovery
Check your tyre pressures, oil level, coolant and fuel before any long motorway journey. Most motorway breakdowns are caused by tyre blowouts, overheating or running out of fuel — all of which are preventable. A 10-minute check before you leave can save hours of stress on the hard shoulder.
If your car has been unreliable recently, get it checked before your next long trip. It’s a much better conversation to have with a mechanic than with a recovery driver on the M1.
