In the immediate aftermath of a road accident, most drivers are running on adrenaline and shock. The last thing you need is more confusion about what happens to your vehicle. Here’s a clear guide to accident recovery and how to make the right decisions in a difficult moment.

Safety First — Always

Before anything else: are you and your passengers safe? Turn off the ignition, switch on hazard lights, and if the vehicle is driveable and it’s safe to do so, move it out of the flow of traffic.

If anyone is injured, call 999 immediately. Don’t move injured people unless they’re in immediate danger. If airbags have deployed, don’t restart the engine.

Once the immediate situation is safe, exchange details with the other driver (name, address, phone number, insurance details, vehicle registration). Take photos of both vehicles, the road layout, any damage and any relevant road signs or conditions.

When Do You Need Accident Recovery?

Accident recovery becomes necessary when the vehicle is:

  • No longer roadworthy (structural damage, deployed airbags, leaking fluids)
  • Blocking the road
  • In a dangerous position where leaving it would cause further hazard
  • So damaged that the driver is unable to assess whether it’s safe to drive

In these situations, a recovery service collects the vehicle and transports it to a safe location — either a repairer of your choice, a bodyshop, your home address or a secure storage facility.

Beware of Crash-For-Cash Recovery Scams

This is something every UK driver should know. Some unscrupulous operators wait near accident scenes and approach distressed drivers with recovery services. They may then charge eye-watering fees and take the vehicle to a storage facility where daily charges accumulate rapidly.

Your vehicle is your property. You have the right to choose your own recovery service. If someone approaches you at the scene uninvited, take their details but don’t commit to anything until you’ve spoken to your insurer or called a trusted recovery provider.

Using Your Insurer’s Approved Repairer vs. Your Own

If you claim through your insurance, they may direct you to an approved repairer. This is your right to accept or refuse. Using your insurer’s repairer is sometimes quicker, but you may prefer to use a bodyshop you trust or your regular garage.

Discuss with your insurer before the vehicle is moved if at all possible. Once a vehicle is at a storage facility, getting it moved again can incur fees.
