Locked Your Keys in the Car? Here’s What to Do

Here’s how to handle it without making it worse.

Before You Do Anything Drastic

Do not break a window. Replacing a car window costs £100–£300+ depending on the vehicle, and in most cases it’s completely unnecessary. There are better options that work in minutes.

Check all doors and the boot. This sounds obvious, but in the stress of the moment, people sometimes overlook an unlocked door on the other side of the car. Check every point of entry.

Check if you have a spare key. Does a family member or partner have the other key? Can they get to you? This is the free solution if it’s practical.

Try the Key Fob

If you locked the car with the fob and it’s inside with you, this clearly doesn’t apply. But if you locked it manually — by pushing the door lock down — the fob may still work from outside if the battery is strong enough. Try holding the fob close to the window.

Call Your Insurer

Some motor insurance policies include key and lockout cover. Check your policy app or call your insurer’s helpline — you might already have this covered.

Similarly, if you have roadside assistance cover with AA, RAC or a similar provider, lockouts are usually included in all membership levels.

Call a Recovery Service or Locksmith

A specialist automotive locksmith or recovery service can often open a vehicle without damage using specialist tools. The technique varies by vehicle and lock type, but in most cases it’s entirely non-destructive.

How to Prevent It Happening Again

Keep a spare key at home in an accessible location. Consider a magnetic key box hidden on the chassis if you regularly have access issues. Some newer vehicles allow you to set up a PIN entry via a mobile app — check whether your car has this feature.

The simplest solution for repeat lockout sufferers is to develop the habit of checking for keys in your hand before closing the door — every single time. It feels unnecessary when it becomes automatic, but it takes only one second and works perfectly.
